Oasthouse Loft

Equally captivating in all four seasons, the Oasthouse Loft makes the perfect location for a romantic weekend or week away. Stroll through our rich bluebell woods in late spring, spot orchids in a carpet of wood anemones in late winter and wander between the foxgloves by the stream in summer. With only a handful of dwellings nearby, this holiday cottage is completely untouched by either noise or light pollution. Just feast on the fresh air and wallow in the silence.

A light, timber-framed space, the Loft’s many windows afford an elevated birds-eye view of an idyllic, traditional rural setting. The wood-burning stove, fuelled by our own woodland, makes it a snug retreat from the outside world, allowing you to submerge yourself in the scenery. Watch fiery sunsets, a sky brimming with stars and pink mist filling the valley at dawn – all from the comfort of your bed.

The Loft in detail…

This one bedroom holiday let, which is furnished to an exceptionally high standard, sleeps two and has a sofa bed for a further two in the living room. It forms part of our oasthouse and small, traditional farm which has been attractively arranged around a pond, shaded by grand old oak trees. In the fields surrounding the Oasthouse Loft goats, cattle and sheep graze, along with two retired horses.

The Loft has one spacious bedroom with a new and luxurious double bed and triple-aspect windows looking out to sensational views. It is furnished with chests of drawers beside the bed and a dressing table with mirror, all with traditional cottage-style painted pine, topped with natural wood. Soft lighting and freshly laundered linen completes the cosy atmosphere, making it warm and snug in the depths of the countryside.

The modern, well-equipped bathroom adjoins the bedroom with a large, luxurious shower, basin and WC. Heated towel rails ensure your soft towels are always warm and ready for use. Guests have access to a washing machine and tumble dryer nearby, and an area for hanging wet coats and boots is also provided.

The open-plan living room and kitchen are tastefully furnished with a deep, comfortable sofa and matching double sofa-bed, for which linen can be provided. The dining table seats four comfortably and is within easy reach of the modern, newly-installed and well-equipped kitchen which contains a cooker with gas hobs, a microwave, dishwasher, fridge, freezer and toaster.

With stylish oak flooring throughout, the room has a really warm and homely atmosphere. A rustic wood burning stove completes this snug haven, ensuring maximum comfort and cosiness should you choose to curl up with a book, watch the TV or a film (TV/DVD player and radio/CD player included) or indulge in some friendly competition with the board games and playing cards provided. Wireless internet is also available should you need to stay in touch with the office.

There is ample lighting should you opt to stay in and relax, taking in the views which are superb in every direction. Look over adjoining fields where the farm animals graze peacefully amid the woods, hedgerows, streams and ancient Sussex oak trees.

There’s plenty to do…

The surrounding fields house our own herd of South African Boer goats which are delightfully clean, attractive and friendly and always keen to welcome our guests. Should you wish to get a little more involved with the animals, you are welcome to join us at feeding time – those who do so have found it a rare and delightful experience to be close to such amiable and intelligent animals.

Guests will enjoy their own private area of garden with wide and stunning views – the perfect place to relax with a cup of tea or watch the sun go down over a glass of wine or two. A barbeque is provided along with a table and garden chairs. Additional facilities include the use of a petanque court (boules) and our small orchard and vegetable garden, which provides ripe, home-grown vegetables when in season. Fresh, free-range eggs from the neighbouring farm are also provided, so long as the chickens oblige!

Those keen on cycling may use our two basic, but functional, mountain bikes for trips through the ample woodlands and across adjoining valleys, grazed by the local Romney sheep. Or follow the various tributaries of the Rother or Tillingham rivers as they meander to the coast via the ancient Cinque Port of Rye. Alternatively you can take off on one of the footpaths that leads out of our farm for gorgeous countryside walks where you can spot deer and occasionally wild boar.

It’s easy to get to…

Approximately one hour from both the Dover ferry terminal and the EuroTunnel at Folkestone and 45mins from the Ashford International Eurostar station, the Oasthouse Loft is easily accessible from the continent. We are also conveniently located within 15 minutes drive of the picturesque Georgian town of Tenterden, the coastal smugglers’ town of Rye, Bodiam Castle, the Battle of Hastings sites and Christopher Lloyd’s stunning gardens at Great Dixter. With the added attraction of the long sandy beach at Camber Sands, this area of Sussex has more than enough to cater for every taste, interest or activity. Please see our ‘Things to See’ page for more information on what to do in the area.

If further accommodation is needed, this can be arranged, by special arrangement, in the guest bedroom of our own home in the neighbouring converted oasthouse. Additional charges will apply for this service and it must be reserved in advance. Alternatively up to four friends and relatives can be accommodated 15 minutes drive away in our Landgate Cottage in Rye. See ‘About Landgate Cottage’ for more information.

All guests will receive a welcome pack containing locally produced milk, home made jam or marmalade, apple juice and fresh free-range eggs from our neighbours’ farm, along with other items of local produce, according to the season.
